Some of the hype I had heard and read led me believe that this would about American Society only with a King. And maybe it is, but I like some other things I’ve read that liken it to a different reality altogether.
The story is about the kingdom of Gilboa and its King Silas. Gilboa is a prosperous country, apparently made that way by a company Crossgen(I wonder where that’s going). Reminiscent of George Orwell.s 1984, there is an obligatory war going on with a neighboring country. During a battle, Silas’ son Jack is kidnapped, only to be saved by a young soldier David Shephard(Chris Eagan). As a reward, Shephard is promoted to Captain and appointed to a post as a public information officer; you know, the one that gives all the prepared answers at the press briefings. He uses his position, which has no authority, to suggest a truce which Silas more or less has to go along with. The only problem is that the original kidnapping was a set up: Silas wanted to off his son, who is a flaming homosexual and unfit to be King, in Silas’ opinion. And Crosssgen, the power behind the throne, doesn’t want a truce. Tune in next Sunday.
All right. As network television goes, this looks pretty good. Well shot and acted, a number of plot elements that could be thought provoking, and a romance involving Shephard, of course. I did find it a bit slow paced, but one has to have time to get up and go to the kitchen to pick up some of the advertised items and settle in again.
